Learning to read is the most important thing your child will learn at our school.
Every subject depends on the ability to read comprehensively. We want your child
to embrace reading with confidence and conviction. Reading will open children’s
minds to a world of knowledge and inspiration.
Phonics and Early Reading-
At Meridian Angel Primary School we believe that it is a moral imperative that all children learn to read fluently, so that they are able to access the wider curriculum and gain knowledge of themselves and the world around them. The teaching of Phonics is a key strategy that is used to help our children to read, write and spell. We are committed to the delivery of quality first teaching of Phonics and aim for children to develop a love of reading that will stay with them all their lives. We use 'Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised' which is a DfE validated, systematic, synthetic phonics programme.
Being able to read is the most important skill children will learn during their early schooling and it has far-reaching implications for lifelong confidence and well-being. As a school reading is prioritised and is at the heart of our curriculum.
We aim to teach high quality phonics to ensure the children have the best start possible in reading and writing. The learning of phonics is the beginning of children's body of knowledge, skills and understanding that are an essential part of learning to read. In order to read and understand texts children must learn to recognise and decode the words on the page.
Good quality phonics teaching allows the child to be secure in the skills of word recognition and decoding which allows children to read fluently. This will result in children being able to read for pleasure and will allow them to move onto developing higher order reading for meaning skills.
These phonic skills need to be taught synthetically and systematically and involve a variety of resources for all learners e.g multi-sensory resources.
