PHYSICAL EDUCATION

PE at Meridian Angel is improving all the time and we are now competing in games within Enfield. Our football team have previously come second in the league! We have purchased our very own Meridian strip! Moving forward our vision is for children to be competing more in a whole range of sports, including dance and gymnastics and our staff team are receiving some excellent training. Fitness is seen as crucial in the school as we firmly believe that it supports all areas of well-being. With this in mind we have worked with Spurs to introduce and implement the daily ‘Active 15’ in school, on the days the children do not do PE, which the children thoroughly enjoy.

Intent:

At Meridian Angel we aim for all children to engage in high quality physical activity which allows them to develop and refine movement and physical skills. We inspire children to engage in competitive sports and activities as a way of encouraging individual talents and abilities. Through our PE curriculum, children develop knowledge about healthy lifestyles and fitness as well as the skills to become physically confident.

PE at Meridian Angel builds on our values teaching, particularly our school values of resilience and friendship. As children learn to persevere with challenges and work cooperatively and collaboratively to achieve an end goal.

Implementation:

Our PE programme is varied and ensures that we meet all aspects of the National Curriculum. All children receive two hours of high quality PE from there class teacher each week. Our sports coach also delivers PE and sports clubs one half day each week to supplement our PE teaching.  Our PE curriculum endeavours to ensure all children develop the confidence and appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. We use the Enfield PE scheme of work as the basis for our PE teaching. These documents are progressive, coherent and apply fundamental skills which are year group appropriate.

Children have the opportunity to further develop their skills in morning, lunchtime and afternoon sports clubs. Although we appreciate the competitive nature of sports we also encourage the mind-set of ‘having a go and trying our best’ to promote positive experiences of being physically active and not always participating to win.

Through Enfield PE team meetings and training, the PE lead has the opportunity to develop and disseminate new strategies and ideas to further improve sporting provisions at our school. CPD opportunities are also provided through in house staff training and training by the Enfield PE team to maintain and develop the highest standards.

Impact:

The children in our school develop an appreciation for team work and sportsmanship through our PE teaching and additional sports clubs and competitions. They show an obvious enjoyment for sport and physical activities and talk positively about their experience of PE and sports in the school.

Children are given verbal feedback within lessons to praise and ensure children are applying the correct technique being taught. Though our PE teaching children develop the understanding of the importance of being physically active and making healthy lifestyle choices. They also understand the link between physical activity and positive mental health and emotional well-being.

Sports clubs

Sports clubs provide pupils the opportunity to participate in an extra curricular sport activity.  We are committed to providing high quality sports provision and believe that every child must be included in this. We provide all of our clubs free of charge and encourage all children to attend throughout the year.
